streptocarpus and other gesneriads

A C H I M E N E S

Temperature: Warm growing - 70 to 90 degrees F; 20 to 30 degrees C.
Watering: Bottom, top or wick watering. Potting mixture must be kept constantly moist during active growth.
Light: High light.
Humidity: 40 to 60 percent.
Fertilizer: Continuously with a higher non-urea based formulation, e.g., 20-20-20.
Soil: Neutral, heading upward to slightly alkaline; pH=6 to 7; Basic Potting Mixture is appropriate.

Propagation - Asexually using tip cuttings, propagules or rhizomes, and sexually (seed) through self or cross pollination. Hybrid plant material will only reproduce true using asexual propagation methods and techniques.

Temperature: Cool to moderately warm growing - 55 to 80 degrees F or 12 to 25 degrees C.
Watering: Bottom or top, with the potting mixture generally allowed to dry out between waterings.
Light: Low to medium light.
Humidity: 40 to 50 percent.
Fertilizer: Continually with a non-urea based formulation, e.g., Dyna Gro 7-9-5.
Soil: Neutral, heading upward to slightly alkaline; pH=6-7; Basic Potting Mixture (BPM) with the addition of dolomitic lime is appropriate.

Propagation -  Asexually using leaves, crowns and suckers or sexually (seed) through self or cross pollination. Hybrid plant material will only reproduce true using asexual propagation methods and techniques.

Temperature: Warm growing - 70 to 85 degrees F; 20 to 30 degrees C. A number of spring or seasonal blooming species and hybrids require cool winter temperatures (60 to 65 degrees) in order to initiate budset, e.g., C. hirta, C. microphylla, C. banksii.
Watering: Bottom, top or wick watering. Potting mixture must be kept constantly moist during active growth.
Light: Medium to high light.
Humidity: 40 to 50 percent.
Fertilizer: Continuously with a non-urea based formulation, e.g., Dyna Gro 7-9-5.
Soil: Neutral, heading downward to slightly acid; Basic Potting Mixture is appropriate.

Propagation -  Asexually using tip and mallet cuttings, and sexually using seed through self or cross pollination. Hybrid plant material will only reproduce true using asexual propagation methods and techniques.

Temperature: Warm growing - 70 to 90 degrees F; 20 to 30 degrees C.
Watering: Bottom, top or wick watering. Potting mixture must be kept constantly moist.
Light: Low light.
Humidity: 50 to 60 percent.
Fertilizer: Continuously with a regular non-urea based formulation, e.g., Dyna Gro 7-9-5.
Soil: Neutral, heading downward to slightly acid; pH=6 to 7; Basic Potting Mixture is appropriate.

Propagation - Asexually using crowns and stolons and sometimes leaves, or sexually (seed) through self or cross pollination. Hybrid plant material will only reproduce true using asexuál propagation methods and techniques.

Temperature: Warm growing - 70 to 90 degrees F; 20 to 30 degrees C.
Watering: Bottom, top or wick watering. Potting mixture must be kept constantly moist during active growth.
Light: High light: once acclimated, kohlerias can tolerate full sun.
Humidity: 40 to 50 percent.
Fertilizer: Continuously with a higher non-urea based formulation, e.g., 20-20-20.
Soil: Neutral, pH=6 to 7; Basic Potting Mixture is appropriate.

Propagation: Asexually using tip cuttings, propagules or rhizomes. Kohlerias can exhibit varying degrees of sterility resulting in low fertility rates, i.e., little or no seed production. Hybrid plant material will only reproduce true using asexual propagation methods and techniques

Temperature: Relatively warm growing - 70 to 80 degrees F; 20 to 30 degrees C. Nematanthus will drop leaves rapidly in temperatures exceeding 80 degrees F (30 degrees C), especially if overwatered.
Soil: Neutral, heading downward to slightly acid; Basic Petting Mixture is appropriate.

Propagation: Asexually using tip and mallet cuttings, and sexually using seed through self or cross pollination. Hybrid plant material will only reproduce true using asexual propagation methods and techniques.

Temperature: Cool to cold growing - 50 to 70 degrees F; 10 to 20 degrees C.
Species such as flaccida can tolerate temperatures reaching into the mid-80s F (28o C) while other species can tolerate temperatures falling into the low 40s F (5o C).
Watering: Bottom, top or wick watering. Potting mixture must be kept constantly moist during active growth.
Light: Low light.
Humidity: 40 to 50 percent.
Fertilizer: Continuously with a non-urea based formulation, e.g., Dyna Gro 7-9-5.
Soil: Neutral, heading upward to slightly alkaline; Basic Petting Mixture is appropriate. The addition of gritty material such as very coarse sand or chicken grits is recommended.

Temperature: Warm growing - 70 to 90 degrees F; 20 to 30 degrees C.
Watering: Bottom, top or wick watering. Potting mixture must be kept constantly moist during active growing cycle.
Light: Medium to high light.
Humidity: 40 to 50 percent.
Fertilizer: Continuously with a higher non-urea based formulation, e.g., 19-17-23.
Soil: Neutral, heading downward to slightly acid; pH=6 to 7; Basic Potting Mixture is appropriate.
